Marcia Gayle Snee

Marcia Gayle is an artist whose medium is imagination. She has worked as a public-school teacher, potter, jewelry-maker, sculptor, painter and gallerist. Imagination is a kind of magic. That sense of magic infused her stoneware forms of the late 1970s; it is evident in her mobiles produced in the 2000s. Most recently she has explored the possibilities of encaustic.

The word “encaustic” is from the Greek “encaustikos” meaning to burn in.  Each new layer of beeswax must be burned in or fused to the layer beneath.  The wax has gone from the molten state to a solid state so quickly, it has not had time to “wed” with the layer beneath; therefore heat must be used.  This fusing of the layers of wax is accomplished by using a heat tool.
